How to Keep Your Dog Safe During Outdoor Adventures

It’s finally summer! Both pets and owners alike are anxious to get outdoors and enjoy the sun.  Unfortunately, warm weather wakes up plenty of hazards. Ticks are out in full force, mosquitos are abuzz, and larger wildlife roams in search of food.

A single run, swim, or hike can put you and your pet at an increased risk of exposure to diseases and parasites, such as lyme disease, rabies, heartworm, and leptospirosis and ehrlichia bacteria. Thankfully, many of these disease risks can be avoided by simply vaccinating your pet. The heat of summer can also be a risk. Pets can get heat stroke from being inside a hot vehicle or  spending too much time outdoors without adequate water. Even walking on hot asphalt can burn their paws.

If you take a few simple steps to prevent summer maladies, those few months of sunshine can be fun for pets and people alike. Never, ever leave your beloved pet unattended in a hot vehicle! Check the temperature of asphalt before taking your pet on a walk. Be sure to provide of shade and water, but don’t forget to change the water at least once per day!  Also, beware that water left in a container, such as a bucket, bird bath, or water bowl, can become a breeding source for mosquitos. Just one container of standing water can produce thousands of mosquitos in a single week! If you take your pet into the wild, bring your own water so that they don’t contract waterborne diseases such as leptospirosis or giardia from streams or puddles.
