Gastrointestinal Problems In Cats And Dogs

Care & Wellness, Cats, Dogs, Nutrition

Gastrointestinal disease in pets can be a minor problem, but can also be more serious, so evaluation and proper treatment by a veterinarian is important. Common gastrointestinal problems in dogs include dietary intolerance (problems digesting certain foods), toxicity due to ingestion of poisonous substances, inflammatory bowel disease, and stomach cancer. To determine the underlying cause and severity of gastrointestinal disease, our veterinarians will perform various diagnostic tests to rule out life-threatening diseases. Pet owners should watch for any unusual symptoms and seek prompt medical help to initiate treatment early. Examples of symptoms, which can vary depending on the type and severity of disease, may include vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, distended abdomen, loss of energy, pain or discomfort.
